june

Today is Mozambique's Independence Day.

I'm not sure what the festivities will involve, other than yesterday when they closed off one of the main roundabouts in town, posted traffic police all around, and had somebody driving a go-cart, speeding round and round and round. But - nobody was watching.

[pause of unresolved confusion]

Tomorrow I leave for nearly two weeks of work-related travel. First, depart at 4:30am to take all-day bus down to Maputo. Arrive at night, get taxi, find guesthouse. Next day, find bus station and take (much shorter) bus to Mbabane, the capital of Swaziland. Stay in Swaziland for 5 days for HIV/AIDS retreat/conference with other service workers and partner HIV caregivers (from SA, Zambia, Zim, Moz, Lesotho, and Swaziland). After conference, travel to Joberg to visit several of our well-established HIV projects in the townships. I am especially looking forward to that.

Then do the whole journey again, but in reverse, until I find myself back on the brown couch in my little house in Macarungo.

(my friend's toast. i just don't understand people who do that.
you could build a whole housing development in those corners without jam.)

Travel well friend. I know I always enjoy shakin' the dust of my feet and taking in new experiences (especially as work is. . .the way it is). Enjoy your conference and connecting with other like-minded folks. You're heavy on my mind/heart.

I have an African American History calender with 2-3 important events for African American culture listed on each day and I smiled when I read "Moz Independence Day" last night :). Happy Indy Day Moz!! I'd happily flash a bus full of people in celebration!
