you will never understand violence

"I worked on the hacienda over there, and I would have to feed the dogs bowls of meat or bowls of milk every morning, and I could never put those things on the table for my own children. When my children were ill, they died with a nod of sympathy from the landlord. But when those dogs were ill, I took them to the veterinarian in Suchitoto.

You will never understand violence or nonviolence until you understand the violence to the spirit that happens from watching your children die of malnutrition."
(A peasant in El Salvador, Extending the Table)

Thanks for posting this excerpt. Do I get upset when I see rows and rows of pet food in supermarkets here in US? Yes, we don't worry about feeding malnourished children because they can't lick our soles like our dogs and cats. Sorry about this rant- It just bought back one memory in particular- few years ago I was house sitting for a family. In the evening the family members called me and said I should keep an eye on a dog that was on arthritis medication (yes, some parts of world we can’t feed hungry children and some parts of world we want to make sure our old dogs should not get arthritis). The same family members got pissed off when they knew that somebody from US is investing money in saving young girls in developing nation from working as prostitutes simply because their mothers were prostitutes. I wish I knew answers for this kind thought process. So far, I have not figured why we are so cold to suffering of our fellow human beings.
