in a nutshell
I attended the funeral of my Mozambican colleague last week in Beira.
This week Sara and I are moving to a new house here in Chimoio. Our landlord wants to live in our current house, The Farmhouse, so we are downsizing to a dipendensia (the maid's quarters behind a larger house). It's small but very nice, cozy for us. We have to walk outside to go between the kitchen, bedrooms, bathroom, living room - but that just means we are becoming more native. It is a lovely little home, The House Where All Our Dreams Come True. That is what we've named it.
Next week I am driving to Zambia with Jenny, Joel, and Tony. I will be visiting some of our HIV projects there for the first week of December, and the second week is our regional retreat, which includes a Christmas service. It will be wonderful to be back in Zambia. Also, because one of our projects is in Choma - a town where I did some of my master's research - I will also be getting together with one of my old research assistants, Florence, who lives there. She is a beautiful person, insightful and kind.
Sara and the others will meet us there for the retreat, and then Sara and I will drive back home together. A few days will pass, and then Christmas. We've already begun cutting out snowflakes to decorate the house, even as we sweat in 90 degree heat.

Ah, Brooke. I'm sorry for your loss. And his. I re-read the last blog you wrote about this man and found the last line ironic now: "He says he'll be out by next month." And so he was.
I'm excited for your December plans! I'll pray that the time and the whole holiday season is one of refreshment for you. Will you send me some pictures of your new house? I'm glad you two found somewhere that's cozy. I hope that's not code for "way too small" or "stiflingly hot". :) I love you. Email me soon, ok?
