happy birthday poppy!!

Today is my dad's 56th birthday. He currently lives in China with my mom, and I haven't seen him for a year. But he's still everything the best fathers should be: very faithful, steady, encouraging, and possessing a totally dorky sense of humor.

He loves 70s rock, young children, playing softball, and driving on long cross-country trips. (Or, at least, he won't let any of us drive.)

The best email he ever sent me (after I'd asked him a dumb question about something and then berated myself for being stupid), said this:
I feel proud of you 24/7/365 to infinity. Everyone has memories spill out of their brain bucket when they have a lot going on. Just a glimpse at your age of what will be for you in the future when you are my age. Remember, among the most important things not to forget is to "keep a sufficient amount of gas in your car at all times!" and "oil changes every 3,000 miles."
Love DAD
That describes him to a T. He is a very good man, and I love him so much.

Happy birthday, Pops.

Happy B-day Poppy Wyssman! My dear friend Shelli just had a baby boy as the clock passed midnight. I left to follow her to Winchester 15 mins after they left...and just missed the birth when I pulled up behind an ambulance on the side of the Mountain Parkway! I thought that I might get to catch my first baby...but the EMT got that privilege. Glad to know that baby Kratzer shares a b-day with a great man!

Hi Brooke. Your dad's advice sounds a lot like mine. Except he says oil every 5,000 miles. Anyway, I think you should label the last picture because though I'm assuming that's him and your mom, she looks an aweful lot like you...EW indeed. :)

Hi Brooke. I've never blogged with anyone before. I just wonder if you have any idea of how many lives you touch in a day? Philip and Abby told me about you a while ago, and I read your blog when I need my heart warmed or shredded, one or the other. What made me finally decide to write on this crazy newfangled thing is to say that I instantly like your dad. There should be a lot more people in the world who not only think generous thoughts, but write them to people they love, thereby encouraging us all.
I also just wanted to say that, as it happens, I am in a book discussion group that will be discussing a different book by Barbara Kingsolver (Animal, Vegetable, Miracle) But you have my curiosity going. I'm going to check out her other book (we talked about doing that one) and compare.
Well, please count me in the string of people who now care about you and the amazing people you write about. MJ

MJ,
I don't usually respond to people's comments, but this was so kind I have to say thank you. People's words really do mean a great, great deal to me, and what you said was one of the nicest. I'm pretty sure I don't know any ninjagrandmas, and therefore not you, but I hope we do meet someday, maybe at one of phil and abby's gourmet dinners? They are two of the best people I know, and if you know them too, well, then you must be pretty great as well.

Anyways - just wanted to acknowledge and thank you.
