This is a tough one. Our home community is in crisis, the whole country is being tested, things are going from real bad to worse, and to leave in the midst of it feels tone-deaf. I am feeling that so much today.
Yet the reverberations of our nation's decisions - because we have such a long reach globally - ripple down to even little Malawi. I previously mentioned the loss of USAID funding in sub-Saharan Africa, how it has been dramatically felt in the sudden absence of basic necessities like medications and staffing. Surely to be the richest nation on Earth means we hold some responsibility to others?
Here is one more way they're feeling those effects in Malawi specifically, and in the area I care about deeply as a midwife and mother:

All I can say is: keep showing up, y'all. We're going to try to do that too, both here and there.

Wow. I had no idea women were dying from post-birth bleeding simply due to lack of medicine and staffing. That is unconscionable when there are solutions. I am so glad you are there!
